Social media makes it easier than ever to make us think things should be a certain way. Streaming shows and magazines show us the best of the best, life flips and ideal expectations we should have for ourselves. The same goes in the art world.

You all know how the military is near and dear to my heart, this interview was released on Veteran’s Day Nov. 2022. I love talking art and even more how it bonds communities and regions. I think this interview could have went on for another hour easily addressing creative placemaking, working with branding, growth, and downtown development.

Not all artists are created equal. Now before you get all ruffled up, hear me out... An Art medium is the method in which you make art. Art style falls within a lane of artistic expression. Modern, abstract, expressionist, realism, pop, architecture, and performance are some examples.

Like everything else and everyone else in this life, you need input for your output. By specifically you need to recharge your batteries. Mentally taking time to digest, relish, and process things is important and most times (for me) this does not involve being in the studio.

Simply put you need to lead, follow or get out of the way.

A phrase I daily remind myself of and one that is resounding in the podcasts I listen to. How can you have progress if you are only ever comfortable? Pushing your limits is not for everyone but it transitions into personal growth, leveling up in your skills, mental growth and so much more.

You may never know how your art connects with a viewer. But when I have the honor to listen to someone describe my work and how it resonates with them is truly a treat.

It was recently told to me that it shows when I am “in my work” or “in my element”. I was working on a public art piece, headphones on (but nothing playing) and urgently spacing and painting some final details.

I am blessed to meet all kinds of artists, business owners and amazing individuals. One thing in common is they know their tools, which I am not just talking about literal tools but craft or trade as well. They really research and gather information to make the best product or be the best they can be.
